Haiti VIM Trip

A Blog page about our trip to Haiti with a VIMUMC team

Team Member Holly Gillum

Hi! My name is Holly Gillum and I am so excited to go to Haiti next week. This is a picture of me with my youngest daughter, Dana.  She is 13 and my other 2 children are Abby, age 15 and Kyle, age 18.  Dana was confirmed at GlenMar United Methodist Church last week and the stole she is wearing has “Dana” on the part you can’t see in the photo.  Leah is her middle name.  We belong to GlenMar UMC in Ellicott City, MD.  GlenMar sent a team to Merger, Haiti, in April of this year and I was blessed to be able to be part of that trip.

Most of the  Haitian people have very little…. very little food, clean water, electricity (and all that comes with it:  TV, internet, lights, hot water, appliances etc), education, employment, recreation, adequate housing, medical and dental care, roads, transportation, financial stability and the ability to save for the future. And yet… I witnessed what life can be like if one does not worry (Matthew 6:25-34, a passage that challenges me!).   Because at the same time,   I witnessed that the  people of Merger  also have so much…. so much warmth, friendliness, the ability to “make do” and remain positive, a strong sense of community,  and an  openness and joy that came with steady faith and trust in God.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to go back.

Note: Here is a way to donate to help us help those in Haiti – we only have 9 days left. We’ve made it as easy as possible by creating a way to donate online – $10 or more – at http://www.razoo.com/story/Haiti-Trip.  We have a $100 donation already that doesn’t show up on the thermometer.
